Antistatic tips for the winter months

Is brushing, taking off your hat or getting dressed becoming a hair-raising experience? If so, it’s because static electricity is present! Here are some tips and tricks for preventing static.

During the cold season, hair tends to dry out, fade and break. And as if that weren’t enough, static shows up and adds to the problem, which makes styling your hair almost impossible! Those with fine hair are especially affected by cold-weather static. Here are some ways you can straighten static out this winter:
  • Opt for a natural fibre brush. Plastic styling tools create static in your hair. Try untangling your hair with a boar bristle brush or horn comb.
  • Cut back on brushing and limit hair treatments like colouring, straightening and perms.
  • Use a good quality, hydrating shampoo. Gently massage into hair and rinse off with warm water. For untangling and smoothing your hair, finish off with a hydrating conditioner. For dry, damaged hair, try Vichy’s Nourishing and Reparative Conditioner—it restores shine and softness.
  • Don’t rub wet hair with a towel. Instead, gently pat it dry or, better yet, let it air-dry naturally. If you absolutely need to use a hairdryer, make sure not to blast your hair with high heat—use your hairdryer’s cool or warm setting instead.
  • Tame those stray strands by smoothing hair with a serum. Apply a dab of PhytoKératine Ultra-Glossing Finishing Serum onto clean, towel-dried hair, or even on dry, styled hair to smooth out static. Don’t leave home without it—the 50 ml bottle fits perfectly in any purse, so you can always be ready to fight static!
  • Protect your hair against humidity and get rid of static in one fell swoop with a spritz of hairspray. Try L’Oréal’s Elnett Extra Strong Hold Satin Hairspray—it’s strong enough to protect and light enough to disappear at the stroke of a brush.
  • Finally, don’t forget the age-old trick of tossing a fabric-softener sheet into the dryer and then rubbing it onto your brush or comb—you’ll instantly get rid of hair static! And if the air in your home is too dry, don’t hesitate to buy a humidifier.
